Tunable Audio Cables FAQs

Fine-tuning your system's performance

How to fine-tune an audio system’s performance using our “Experience’ audio cables

“If you ‘Experience’ what a tunable cable can do in a system, there just might be no turning back.” HiFi+ Magazine

Your HiFi system’s performance depends on correctly matched cables. Without these it can fall short in areas such as:

  • Mid-band clarity
  • Soundstage size and precision
  • Top-end air and bass weight and warmth

Tuning our cable’s electrical properties by inserting spacers in specific loops along its length, allows better component matching preventing a loss of this detail.

Our cables are not acting as tone controls but allowing expression of detail that already exists within your HiFi components for example:

  • Tuning loop 5 on our 1m interconnect can allow correct expression of your system’s mid-band detail
  • Loop 7 releases a larger soundstage with greater bass weight and warmth
  • Tuning around loop 15 can release more of your system's top-end air and space

What is your 60 day money back guarantee?

60-Day money-back guarantee on our audio cables

Your stress-free solution to auditioning your new interconnect

As experienced HiFi owners, you know it takes some time to become fully acquainted with a new piece of audio equipment. Time, of course, is needed for the conductors to ‘settle’ so they can perform at their best but, perhaps more importantly, tuning into what a cable can achieve musically takes a little longer. You can’t hurry this process, so we think you should enjoy the experience in the comfort of your own home with our 60-day money-back guarantee. If you are not completely satisfied you can send the cable back for a full refund within that time. See full terms and conditions on returning products.

Our 60-Day money-back guarantee is available on standard lengths of cables shown on Wire On Wire’s website and does not cover bespoke items. Other items are covered by a 14-day money-back guarantee.

How to return a product

Contact us and we will give you a Return Merchandise Authorisation (RMA) number because we can't accept goods back without one. Send a copy of your receipt with the item you are returning.

To avoid damage in the post please ensure you use a sturdy cardboard box (not the printed product box) and send it to:

Wire On Wire Ltd, 2 Mospey Crescent, Epsom, Surrey, KT17 4LZ, UK.

We can’t be responsible for returned items that have been lost or damaged in the post, so we recommend that you return items by Parcel Force Special Delivery. Always retain your proof of posting. We are unable to cover the cost of return postage except where items are faulty or have been sent in error.

What is your lifetime warranty?

The first thing to say is that we are here to help so just get in touch with us if you have a problem.

Our cables carry a full limited lifetime warranty against manufacturing faults and defects for a minimum of 25 years, which applies to the original purchaser (see full terms and conditions).

Can you custom build cables?

Custom building cables

All our cables are bespoke items, hand-made from carefully chosen wires, so if you would like to contact us with your ideas we would be only too happy to create something unique for your own audio system.

How much tuning does an audio cable need?

There are many loops to chose from so isn’t tuning an audio cable rather difficult?

It’s true, there are a lot of loops in some of our interconnects but tuning is straightforward for several reasons.

Firstly, when we make a cable, we test which loops are most effective at changing the sound presentation. Many loops when enlarged produce little or no effect and therefore can be left untouched. Those loops that do make a difference we categorise under two main reference headings, which are our ‘Studio’ and ‘Stage’ presentations. Of course, there is nothing to stop individuals from making up their own mind about the other tuning positions.

To make things even easier our research has shown that it doesn’t take much to tune a cable, even one as long as five meters, which in spite of having 68 loops only needs to be tuned at 8 loops, of which four are common to both of our reference ‘Studio’ and ‘Stage’ presentations.

The other reassuring aspect to tuning a HiFi system with our cables is that changes are not difficult to hear for the listener. By opening up a loop by a few millimeters with the fingers it is immediately possible to hear a change that either appeals musically to that individual or doesn’t. People with little interest or experience in HiFi can hear the difference, which is a testament perhaps to our innate ability to detect sonic changes around us for the purposes of predation (the sound of an animal waiting for us in the undergrowth) or for our hunting purposes (that same animal in the bush).

International shipping charges

Please note for non-EU and EU countries, import duties, taxes, and charges and postal delivery rates are not included in the item price. These charges are the buyer’s responsibility. Please check with your country’s customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying and contact us for international shipping charges.

What is the unique advantage your audio cables have over conventional designs?

The patented tunable geometry we use not only creates a high-end, audiophile cable as its default setting but also allows it to be fine-tuned for optimal performance between hifi components.

The ability of the conductor relationships in our REDpurl™ Adaptive Geometry to be altered by the user is unique compared to the fixed geometry of conventional audio cables. The design also offers many other benefits as you can read on our design page.

How do Spacers tune your audio cables?

How do Spacers tune your audio cables?

We currently have two different spacers as shown above, our original on the left and our new ‘Vibe’ spacer on the right inserted into the cable’s REDpurl™ geometry.

They alter the relationship between conductors within a loop marked out by the white conductors.

The relationship between conductors in any interconnect alters the sound presentation of a hifi audio system as it determines a cable’s electrical characteristics such as capacitance.

Our new ‘Vibe’ spacer adds to the flexibility of our cable’s design by absorbing vibration and translating it into thermal energy.

Both spacers are available for tuning.

What is a tunable loop and where do the spacers go in your audio cables?

What is a tunable loop and where do the spacers go in the Experience range of audio cables?

If you look at the Experience680 tunable audio cable below you will see that each tunable loop is formed by a pair of large red conductors. The spacers used to tune the cable are always inserted where the smaller single blue conductor crosses the large red.

The Experience680 interconnect showing where to insert a spacer to tune the cable

The Experience880 and Experience880-Balanced are similar in design but the tunable loops are formed by a pair of white conductors and the spacer is inserted where the small blue conductor crosses the white.

The Experience880 interconnect showing where to insert a spacer to tune the cable

The Experience660-S uses one large red and one large blue conductor to form a loop and the spacer is inserted where the smaller conductor crosses either of these.

How do you tune your audio cables for the best HiFi sound

What are the benefits of tunable audio cables?

  • Improved Sound Quality: Tunable audio cables allow you to fine-tune your hifi system leading to better sound quality.
  • Flexibility: These cables can be adjusted to fit different audio systems, ensuring optimal sound performance.
  • Customizable: You can adjust the cables to match your own listening preferences creating the clarity and detail you expect.
  • Cost-effective: Purchasing tunable audio cables can be a cost-effective solution compared to upgrading entire audio systems to improve sound quality.

Why do you insulate your audio cables with PTFE?

PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) is used as an insulator in high-end, hifi audio and speaker cables for the following reasons:

  1. Low dielectric constant: PTFE has a low dielectric constant, which means it greatly minimizes interference with the electrical signals passing through the cable. This helps to maintain a high level of signal integrity and accuracy.

  2. Low dielectric absorption: PTFE also has low dielectric absorption, which means it does not store energy from the electrical signal. This helps to prevent the build-up of electrical charge in the cable, which can cause signal degradation and distortion.

  3. Chemical and temperature resistance: PTFE is highly resistant to chemicals and temperature changes, which helps to maintain the stability of the insulation over time.

  4. Durability: PTFE is a tough, flexible material that can withstand repeated bending and twisting, making it well-suited for use in our tunable audio cables.

These properties make PTFE a good choice for use as the insulating material in high-quality audio cables, where accurate signal transfer and durability are important.
